What’s the Difference: Water-resistant vs. Waterproof Fitness Bands

By Akshara Bala Dec 22, 2020

Your choice of fitness tracker plays a crucial role in tracking your fitness journey. If your fitness regime involves pumping iron at the gym or running in the outdoors, you sure need to invest in a water-resistant fitness band that is sweat proof. Similarly, if you are someone who is prone to forgetting to take off your fitness tracker before a shower or wants to be sure that getting caught in that occasional rain shower does not affect your fitness tracker, you sure need a highly water-resistant band. On the other hand, if you don't love working up a sweat but do love the benefits of a cardio workoutswimming, then a waterproof fitness tracker would be an ideal match!

While choosing a fitness band, it’s important to know that you have a choice of opting for a lightly water-resistant band, a highly water-resistant band or a fully waterproof one.

The Right Waterproof Fitness Tracker or Water-Resistant Fitness Band for You

After deciding what your exact requirement is, it is time to make an informed choice. The answer to making the right choice lies in something called IP (Ingress Protection) ratings. These are the industry standards that define how well protected your device is from dust, dirt sand and freshwater.

Understanding IP Rating

The letters “IP” are followed by two numbers; the first number refers to protection from dust and the second number is to do with moisture protection. The first number is almost always a six, which is the highest rating. The second number could range from 1 to 8 depending on its water protection capabilities.

Anything rated IPX5 or IPX6 can be considered reasonably water-resistant. While it would offer protection from sweat, rain etc, it would not be safe for a full immersion. If you are looking for your device to be protected from a complete immersion in water with a depth of more than 1 meter, you are certainly looking for an IP68 rating.

Understanding Water depths

A number of waterproof devices can be used at depths down to 50 meters for a specified amount of time, and are therefore ideal for your swimming workout. All you need to do is, make sure you dry it off once you are out of the pool.

Protip: It will help to specifically check whether your waterproof device is also actually equipped to track swims like the PLAYFIT devices.
